Do you know where your local reuse store is?
YES! With so many people and businesses renovating, there’s no shortage of scrap building materials. For those of us who see beauty in the old—and can reimagine toilet bowls as plant potters—reuse centers selling salvaged materials and supplies can be a weekend haven.
Community Forklift is my favorite. Located just outside of the D.C. in Hyattsville, MD, Community Forklift is a huge warehouse filled corner to corner with low-cost building materials from pulled-up hardwoods to mantels to radiator covers. They also have a great selection of recycled and eco-friendly paint, offer green-living classes, and have sales throughout the year. Yeah, I’m a fan.
The Forklift, and similar stores, are working to keep landfill waste down. Our support through donations and sales helps ensure reusable materials get a second life. So, take a few minutes and look up salvage/reuse centers in your area and visit one this weekend to see what you can make new again.
